5 Simple Ways to Speed Up Your PC

There are many ways to improve computer performance, from hardware upgrades to editing the Registry. But upgrading hardware can be quite expensive and editing the Windows Registry can seriously harm your computer if you do something wrong. In this article I’ve focused on simple and safe tweaks that will not cause any trouble and will make your computer run faster.
1) Speed Up Windows Explorer

Sometimes starting Windows Explorer can take a while. This is because Windows automatically looks for network files, shared network folders, and devices when you start Windows Explorer. It is possible to make it open faster by changing the settings:

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Click on Tools menu
3. Then click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab
5. Find Automatically search for network folders and printers check box and uncheck it
6. Click Apply, then click OK
7. Reboot your PC

From now on Windows Explorer will start faster, as it will no longer automatically search for network files, shared folders, and devices in the network.
2) Optimize Appearance Settings

We all are used to how Windows XP looks. But actually its visual effects waste system resources. The graphics card is not the only one that has to deal with it - the CPU and the memory are affected as well. Windows Vista graphics are even more advanced and can dramatically slow down your PC, especially if your computer is not one of the latest and the fastest ones.

Luckily there is a way to configure Windows XP for best performance by reducing the effects in the graphical user interface. This will free up RAM and increase computer speed. To configure Windows XP for maximum performance do the following:

1. Go to Start - Settings and select Control Panel
2. In the Control Panel, click System and then Advanced tab
3. In the Performance Options window select Adjust for best performance
4. Click OK to confirm and close the window

This will turn off all visual effects, which is good for less powerful PCs and laptops. However, if you would like Windows XP to look more like what you’re used to, leave the following boxes ticked:

* Show shadows under menus
* Show shadows under mouse pointer
* Show translucent selection rectangle
* Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
* Use visual styles on windows and buttons

3) Uninstall Unused Device Drivers

Once you have uninstalled a device, it’s a good idea to remove any device drivers that were left behind. Otherwise those drivers will still be using valuable system resources. Here is why this happens.

When you install a device, you also install its drivers and they get called each time you boot up your PC. And even when the device has been removed, but the drivers are still there, your system continues to load them at boot up. What a waste of resources!

If you have Windows XP, follow these steps to remove any unwanted device drivers:

1. Press the Windows key + the Break key on your keyboard. System Properties box will appear
2. Select the Advanced tab
3.
4. Click Environmental
Variables
5. Under System Variables click New
6. In the variable box type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
7. Type 1 in the Variable value text box
8. Click OK to return to the System Properties box
9. Click OK again
10. Go to the Device Manager tab
11. Click View - Show hidden devices

Then you will need to expand all the branches and look for washed out icons. Those icons show unused device drivers that you can uninstall.

Once you have found a device driver you wish to uninstall, highlight it, right-click it, and choose Remove. Delete only washed out icons. All the other icons show drivers of connected and used devices. If you delete them, your devices will stop functioning properly.
4) Remove Software You Don’t Need

One more way to speed up your PC is to check what software you have installed and see if you need all the applications or not. To do this click Start - Settings - Control Panel - double-click Add/Remove Programs.

Most likely you will find programs you’ve used only once or twice. Removing them will free up disk space and make your PC run faster.
When Uninstalling Software Fails

Uninstalling software doesn’t always go as smooth as one hopes it would. A very common problem is that some programs don’t remove all their data completely, thus leaving some files behind. These files are called junk files.

Sometimes you have to uninstall the software trial version
in order to register the full version. But if the uninstall process is not complete, you might fail to register the program that you have paid for.

If the uninstaller doesn’t work, it may be possible to remove the software manually. This means that you will need to remove all related files and configuration data from your hard disk. Usually software uses the Windows Registry to store configuration information.

Firstly, you will need to find the folder where the program was installed. Most likely it’s the Program Files directory. Locate the software folder and delete it. If it’s impossible to delete some files, try restarting your computer. This will help if the files were used by the system. If you can’t delete the files even after a restart, try booting in Safe Mode (tap F8 during PC boot) and then delete the files.

After that you will need to remove invalid Registry entries. Microsoft offers a free Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to help you do the job. After you’ve installed and opened it, select an application you wish to uninstall from the list. The utility will remove all registry entries related to that software. Double check what applications you select and also backup the Registry in case something goes wrong.

If running Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not solve the problem, you can use a third party registry cleaner. Be careful and only use well-known software that has received positive reviews and trustworthy awards. There are lots of programs that claim to be great, but in fact they contain malware and spyware, and can damage your computer.

Another way to uninstall software without having to worry about the Registry is to use a software uninstaller. Program uninstallers track down and remove all application-related components from your system, thus ensuring that the software gets completely uninstalled.

Auslogics BoostSpeed contains both an uninstaller and a registry cleaner, plus lots of other useful tools to optimize and protect your system. You can download it from http://www.auslogics.com.

5) Disable Indexing Services

The Indexing Services use large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer pretty slow and loud. This service indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer in order to enable you to search for the files and folders faster. To tell you the truth, this service is not really needed and you can safely disable it.

1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click Add/Remove Windows Components
6. Uncheck Indexing Services
7. Click Next and then click Finish

World's first personal supercomputer unveiled

The world's first personal supercomputer, which is 250 times faster than the average PC, has been unveiled.

With its £4,000 price tag, the Tesla supercomputer is beyond the reach of most consumers, but is expected to revolutionise the way scientists and medical professionals carry out their work.

The gadget's power will allow doctors to process the results of brain and body scans much more quickly. This would allow them to tell patients within hours instead of days whether they have a tumour.

Scientists also believe that the supercomputers could help them discover cures for diseases, such as cancer and malaria, much more quickly than using traditional research methods.

This is because the device lets them run hundreds of thousands of simulations to create a shortlist of the drugs that are most likely to offer the potential for a cure.

Until now, supercomputers were massive systems made up of thousands of machines taking up entire rooms, which cost millions of pounds to build and maintain.

By contrast, Tesla personal supercomputers will cost between £4,000 and £8,000 and look much like an ordinary PC.

David Kirk, chief scientist at NVIDIA, the American company which has designed the new technology, said: "Pretty much anything that you do on your PC that takes a lot of time can be accelerated with this."

"These supercomputers can improve the time it takes to process information by 1,000 times.

"If you imagine it takes a week to get a result [from running an experiment], you can only do it 52 times a year. If it takes you minutes, you can do it constantly, and learn just as much in a day."

The new computers make innovative use of graphics processing units - a technological breakthrough, which the company claims could bring lightning speeds to the next generation of home computers.

They went on sale to British customers yesterday and will initially be sold to universities and to the scientific and research community.

The PC maker Dell, however, said that it would soon be mass producing them for the general consumer market.

Eric Greffier, a Dell senior executive, said: "Before mobile phones were reserved for the few, now we can't live without them. It will be the same with these supercomputers. They are the building block for the computing of the future."

Tips To Improve Your Internet Safety Knowledge

These days there are more and more people who feel that the phrase internet safety is a real contradiction in terms. There is no question that in recent years there has been an escalation in the number of internet threats to computer users because of "bad guys" who are trying to crack into personal computers to get at the information they store. Because of this, it is more important than ever for people to be very vigilant and to take every possible precaution in order to make sure that their computer is properly protected.
Knowing how to maintain the safety of your computer, your network and all of your files and information has become a real necessity today. Because so many people depend on their personal computer's these days, this is no longer a topic just for computer experts or for businesses, but for anyone who has a PC sitting on their desk or a laptop within their reach.

However, many people have no idea where to start to learn about internet safety, or how to protect their personal computers and their internet connection in order to keep internet threats to a minimum and have a sense that they have a high degree of computer internet security and protection in place. The following information will help provide some basic information that every computer owner needs to know and implement.

First of all, you need to be sure that you are using a firewall. If you take no other steps to toward internet security, the minimum that you need to do is to make sure you have a firewall up and running. A firewall will act as a barrier of protection between your computer and your connection to the internet and will prevent remote computers from being able to connect to yours unless you specifically permit it.

If you have a broadband router, then there is a good chance that it includes a firewall. Also, these days most versions of both Windows and Mac operating systems include at least a basic level of firewall software to thwart any threats to your system.

Secondly, you must have a plan and system in place for backing up the data on your computer. At best, you will backup your entire drive so that it can be restored in its entirety if your hard drive crashes.

At the bare minimum, you should be sure that your most critical files are backed up; the kind of files that would really hurt and cause you a loss of time or money, or both, if you had to try to replicate them. There are many systems available these days that make backing up your data automatic and virtually hands free.

The third thing you should do to help make sure that you enjoy the best level of online safety for your computer system is to make sure that all of the critical software you use is kept updated. In addition, you need to make sure that any software you own that interacts with the internet, such as your preferred web browser, is kept up to date. Software manufacturers continually update their programs in order to help maintain their own internet security systems for their users, which help to combat various viruses and other threats.

Finally, you should make sure that you diligently and regularly scan your computer for viruses and for spyware that might have gotten past your firewall and gotten installed into your computer. There are a number of free programs that will scan for safety breaches.

Some programs require you to purchase their internet security software in order to remove viruses and spyware programs, while others are completely free. However, any internet security review will probably recommend the purchase of internet safety software, as you will have a better chance of completely eliminating the problems from your computer.

Mike Selvon has some informative articles for the creative mind. Find out more about internet safety at his resourceful site. We appreciate your feedback at our internet safety rules blog.

A Digital TV Converter Can Be The Ultimate Christmas Gift

What exactly is the digital television transition? The digital transition is the transition from analog and digital television signals to only digital television. On February 17th of 2009 this transition WILL take place. At this time all full-power television stations will be required to switch to a 100% digital television signal.

Many people WILL be affected by this switch? If they have an analog television it will no longer pick up television signals after the transition. They will still be able to use their television for the viewing of movies but no local over the air TV channels.

If you know someone who will be affected, a digital converter box might be the perfect Christmas gift for them. If you obtain a government coupon, it can be a very inexpensive gift also.

Why are TV stations going to DTV transition? The transition has been mandated by the government and it is being required for several reasons. After the digital transition consumers will be able to get a better picture, better sound quality, and more programming options. The digital transition will also open up analog airwaves for police and fire.

People who have satellite or cable TV service only will not be affected by the switch. Even if their TV is an older type analog set.

How do you know if their television is analog? If their television does not have a digital tuner then it is analog. If it was manufactured before 2007 then it is not equipped with a digital tuner and they will need a converter box*.

What is a digital TV converter box? A TV converter box is a small box that converters digital television signals so that they can be viewed on your analog television.

What is a converter box* coupon? The converter box coupon program provides consumers with a $40 off coupon on the purchase of a TV converter box*.

Who is providing the converter box coupons? The NTIA was appointed by the house and senate to take care of the converter box coupon program.

So if you have a friend, or relative that will be affected by the digital TV transition and you know they are not prepared. Get them prepared! A digital TV converter box under the Christmas tree will be the gift they will enjoy for a long time!

The Notebook - Why Should You Buy One At All?

A notebook computer, also called a laptop, is a smaller mobile computer. The term laptop was coined back in the 80`s, because they were so small that they could sit on your lap.

All notebook computers open like a book to reveal a 12`` to 20`` screen and a keyboard at the base with a touchpad. This touchpad is also known as a track pad which acts as a mouse. A notebook computer`s hardware is physically smaller in size and usually less powerful than a desktop. Most notebooks can do everything a desktop can these days, right from playing CD`s, games, music, run office applications to surfing the web.

With most notebooks having several built-in USB ports, any peripheral can be connected to a laptop including printers, mp3 players, and external hard drives. Notebooks give the user the flexibility to work wherever they want, whether at home, at the beach or in an airplane. Wireless connectivity to the internet is one of the best features of notebook computers.

Even before desktops went wireless, people used their wireless connections with their laptop to surf the web anywhere they wanted. Notebooks opened up an altogether new world with their mobile technology. Businessmen could fly across the country and keep their files with them and access them from their personal notebooks whenever required. The notebook also found its use in the campuses around the world for students to take down notes, look up for resources and research topics online.

Notebook computers range in price from around $500 to $3000 depending on the power of the CPU, the amount of memory one needs, the audio and video features selected as well as the peripherals chosen. Another important determinant for the price of a notebook is its weight. Because the primary use of a notebook is its mobile computing, a light weight unit is important to many people. Notebooks range from 3 to 7 lbs in weight and one has to pay more for a lighter computer.

When you own a laptop, you are almost certainly going to need a notebook computer accessory. There are all sorts of notebook peripherals that help make portable computing easier and more convenient. If you are looking for a cheap notebook computer, there are a few issues you need to be aware of so that you do not skimp on quality.

Computers have become so commonplace in our lives that we sometimes forget that they are intricate pieces of technology that demand care. And notebook computers are no exception. You may also wish to own a used notebook computer or a refurbished notebook computer that has been cleaned, fixed, upgraded and is ready for reuse.

Refurbished notebooks are popular because they are a less expensive way of owning a notebook. The first commercially available laptop notebook computer was in 1981. It was heavy and slow. But it was also the first step in computer technology. Then in 1995, Microsoft launched Windows 95 which enabled laptop computers to contain a universal processor, the Intel Pentium. Since that time there have been some noteworthy innovations that propelled the notebook to reach millions of homes and offices worldwide.

The best budget notebook is what every consumer wants when looking for a nice portable computer. Notebook computers are perhaps the best type of computers that a person can buy and is the ultimate in portability. Notebooks are a favorite in computing. Because just as the cell phone has almost replaced the home phone, the notebook computer can do everything a desktop can.

So many people like to have a notebook exclusively, only because it gives them the flexibility to use it in bed at night, at their desk at work, or in a meeting halfway across the globe!
You can have access to portuguese articles about notebooks from page www.polomercantil.com.br/notebook.php

Make My Computer Faster - Three Quick and Easy Steps To Make My Computer Faster

As a computer technician, the #1 question I receive from customers is – How can I make my computer faster? My first piece of advice is always the same. Before investing hundreds even thousands of dollars on upgrades or new computers, why not make sure your computer is running at top speed first. And I will tell you, over 95% of people I have met are not utilizing the full speed of their computer.
And often times I am perplexed. After all, people spend tons of money on the latest and fanciest equipment. Yet they spend no time performing maintenance tasks. Their computer runs slow and they just ask how to make my computer faster. Well follow these three steps and you can turn your computer from a Volkswagen to a Ferrari.

Eliminate unnecessary startup programs. Every new piece of software we install thinks it should open automatically every time we start our computers. Well this is hogwash. Not only does it cause your computer to have a slow startup, it also eats up valuable RAM and gives your computer a sluggish feeling. Eliminating as many programs as possible will make your computer faster than ever.

Use the disk defragmenter. I advise people to run a disk defrag once a month. How often do you run one? What the disk defragmenter does is quickens your computers access to data. Many files are fragmented and need to be compiled into neat sections. The disk defragger will make your computer run faster when accessing and running different programs.

Clean up Windows registry. The Windows registry is one of the most complicated, important, and least understood areas of our computer. The registry contains the information to run every single piece of software and hardware in our computers. And more often than not, the directory is a complete mess. Yet at the same time because it is such a sensitive area, no one should attempt to clean their registry without the help of a program. When people ask “how to make my computer faster” the #1 biggest help is a clean and optimized Windows registry.

For computer experts, these steps should be quite easy. Those of you who are less than experts, don’t worry. I actually use a program that can perform all three of these tasks very easily. Not only will it make your computer faster, with scheduled scanning and auto repair and cleaning, you can actually completely automate the maintenance of your computer. Simply set it and forget it. Before you throw hard earned money at new equipment why not give this a shot first. Scan your computer below for free. Tired of your sluggish computer? Do you wish it ran more like the hare and less like the touroise? Did you know you can get your computer running like new with a simple free scan? Speed up your computer with the best registry cleaner on the market

The Secret to Getting Rid of Computer Viruses

Viruses can be annoying and they can be extremely destructive, however they can be fairly easy to prevent. If you have an anti-virus program running at all times on your computer, as well as take great care in opening email attachments, odds are your computer will remain virus free.

The majority of viruses are transmitted through emails. Unfortunately it's not enough to trust emails only from addresses you recognize. Many email viruses actually will email themselves to emails found in your own address book. This means that an email from a "safe" address could actually contain a virus. You should discard any emails which you don't recognize the sender, and always virus scan attachments from those that you do.

If you don't currently have anti-virus software running on your computer your data and entire computer are at risk. If it is cost you are worried about, it is no excuse. Most anti-virus programs will run anywhere from free to $50.

Anti-virus programs work by looking for virus signatures. When you receive any file the software will scan it and alert you should it find a virus signature. Most allow for full system scans at your request or at a scheduled time when you won't be using your PC. When a virus is found most software will give you several options, such as delete or quarantine.

It is vital that you keep your anti-virus software updated. While virus signatures, or coding patterns, are very similar, they do change and if you don't have an updated program a virus may sneak by undetected. Most programs will update their databases automatically or alert you when an update is available.

While anti-virus software is the best protection against viruses, it's not always perfect. Users should take great care when adding files to their computers, via email, downloading, or even CDs and DVDs. Anytime you are taking files from an external source and transferring them to your hard drive you run the risk of also transferring a computer virus. You should always virus scan any files before adding them or immediately after if need be.

How to Protect your Whole Family Online from Hackers and Predators!

Today more than ever, there are more threats from the online world. It's seems every time you turn around you hear another story about someone computer or personal identity being stolen.

It can happen in an instant and without a flash. Before you know it, it's too late to stop it.

If you have a family you want to protect, you want to make sure they are safe online, where no one can get at them.

That's why you need to be more pro active about your computer when it comes to security. Sure you may think it's hard and you also may think it's only for geeks. But fear not, because you too can learn how.

1. The first thing you need to do is jump on the internet and read a little. Get a feel for what goes on in the news and see what relates to computer security. This will help keep you motivated to learn more.

2. Stop at your local computer super store and ask some of the sales people their views about online security. Sales people are some of the most knowledgeable people on the planet.

3. Get some kind of protection for your computer. There are many software titles in the stores. You want something that will keep your computer free of viruses.

4. Call the maker of your computer. If your are still not sure about what to do to protect yourself and your computer. Then call the company who made your computer. You paid for it right?

Staying motivated to learn a little about computer security can be a tough task. But you should learn at least something.

If you do nothing at all, at least ask a friend for some help. Pay them or whatever it takes. If your computer is not protected you just are not aware of what is going on around you.

Hackers and viruses can be like that. They have a certain stealth effect. I once found over 2000 viruses on a friends computer.

They had no idea they were on there. Their computer started to run slow and that was about it. However, with that many viruses loaded in there. It was only just a matter of time before something bad happened.

Viruses can be that way. They sit on your computer for awhile and then they release at a certain date. People who write these programs can tell them to do all sorts of things.

Remember a computer virus acts just like a virus you or I may get. One it's in there it will duplicate it's self over and over again.

This is why you need to learn a little and protect all your information on your computer.

Free Online Virus Check - Is it Worth It?

A few years ago when we used to surf the Internet, we used to be afraid of catching a virus. And if our computer got infected, it used to be a complete nightmare to get rid of the virus. However, thanks to the advances Internet technology has made we can now use online virus check to detect any infection and get rid of it.

There are many websites on the Internet that offer free online virus check. However, you need a website that also offers solutions to get rid of the virus. The free online virus check program uses Active X and you should use Internet Explorer browser while accessing the program.

As the online scan begins, the program starts comparing the name of the files on your computer with the database of viruses that the program has. It goes without saying that certain free online virus check programs are more effective than others. According to certain users, Kaspersky virus scanner has the highest rate of virus detection compared to any other free online virus check. Many users who have Active X disabled will be pleased to hear that they can conduct a virus scan using Trend Micro Housecall as it supports Firefox and Java besides Active X.

When you conduct an online virus scan you do not have to worry about installing any program on your computer. Everything happens online. The downside of online virus scan is that you can only get rid of the viruses if you purchase the product. These programs do offer a scan without the benefits of a removal. However, nowadays things are gradually changing and you can get online virus scans which also remove the viruses from your system. One of the most popular programs is BitDefender which does the scan and also removes the virus without having to purchase it.

Modern Computer Networking and its Importance for Business

Computer networking is the connecting of two or more computers that allows them to share resources. It can be done between computers in a home, in a business, across a corporation, and even internationally. It can equally be defined as a method of connecting two or more computer systems together including printers and other devices.
The benefits of networking are considerable, even on a network of only three systems. In computer networking there was never a truer statement than that this is a case of advantages experienced being far greater than the sum of the parts. PC networking is, as a consequence, a rapidly evolving discipline with many exciting opportunities. Challenges that arise in networking and particularly in the Internet tend to be truly global and have the potential to impact upon millions of users.

One huge and growing impact is Internet shopping. Shopping online has grown over the last 10 years to become a huge market, and if a sales business does not today incorporate this technology use they will fall behind their competitors.

But computer networking is also producing much more subtle uses within our societies. For example, Internet technologies can be deployed to favorably condition empathic response in those who have offended against community norms out of a lack of appreciation for the effects that their criminal behavior has on other people. In other words Internet linked devices can track home prisoners to maintain their behavior, in ways that 20 years ago had not even entered the heads of science-fiction writers, to the benefit of society as a whole.

Wireless Internet technology, is the development, also known as WiFi, which is really taking over the way people access the Internet and it has become widely popular in a very short space of time. One reason for this is it allows individuals to access the Internet via a network hot spots, while traveling without the use of cables or wires. In short it releases us from the tyranny of wires and plugs!

Wireless networks are now widely used including Internet-enabled mobile phones with cellular phone networks and, within buildings, wireless networks such as Bluetooth. These are in addition to the site networks used by academic institutions and large businesses. Wireless routers must be configured immediately for security right after you set up your network. It is important to emphasis that wireless can easily also mean insecure unless users are careful to set systems up correctly.

So, do this right away, as soon as you have got the device running. You need to set a new password for the router and limit access to only those computers on your wireless network.

Informally defined computer networking is the foundation of the Internet. The Internet itself is easier to understand when defined as the set of users, enterprises, and content providers that are interconnected by Internet Service Providers (ISP).

From an engineering standpoint, and please forgive me for being rather technical here; the Internet is the set of subnets, and aggregates of subnets, which share the registered IP address space and exchange information about the reachability of those IP addresses using the Border Gateway Protocol . Computer networks may also be classified according to the network layer at which they operate according to some basic reference models that are considered to be standards in the industry such as the seven layer OSI reference model and the five layer TCP/IP model.

Companies that use their own computer networks must administer complex systems which, once deployed, become vital tools for the continued efficiency of their operations. They employ administrators who focus primarily on the day-to-day operation of networks, while network engineers deal primarily with system upgrades, security testing, and so on.

Given the highly technological nature of computer networks you would have thought that just maintaining and developing these would be hard enough. However, companies also routinely face ongoing challenges with the fight against damaging software, such as malware such as worms, viruses, and spyware.

Computer networking has enabled people to work on the move, and take work home much more efficiently than has ever been possible before. Today's mobile workforce attach numerous devices to the corporate network that are hard to control from a security policy perspective. It is a common strand that companies that maximize the use of and benefits from the capacities and capabilities of their networks are able to gather, analyze, and disseminate critical marketing information quickly, which can give them an advantage over their competitors.

However, data loss and system downtime can bring any business to it's knees, so in this area to use the strictly cheapest systems and labor, may be a false economy of the first order. There are many highly trained staff who participate in Microsoft's certified computer networking courses and qualification. These specialists are more than able to protect your business network day and night. They deliver network support services which include data security, data backup and disaster recovery plans.

Steve Evans writes about computer and social networking at his popular blog "Fast Track Networking". To continue to his blog click the linked text which follows for Internet Networking.

Apple IPhone #1?

There are several types of mobile phones that are launched these days. There are many cellular phones, which are launched by different manufacturers of mobile phones such as Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Nokia. But there is only a single fascinating phone, which is admired by the people all over the world due to its cool features and amazing graphics. The mobile phone launched by Apple and is known by the name iPhone.
Just before the one year completion from the launch of iPhone in the market, 3G iPhone has been launched into the market. The launch has attracted the attention of many consumers due to introduction of 3G Version in the mobile phones. Apple 3g phones have become the center of attention due to it new version technologies specially the Wi-Fi.

The new facilities available in 3G apple I phone are as follows: * 3G facility * Design * GPS The new version of Apple iPhone 3g is very slim as compared to the previous iPhones. The new phone are available in two sizeable internal memories. There are two varieties of Apple 3G I- phones, one which is available with 8GB with black plastic skin and other one is 16 GB with black or white phone skin.

The iPhone takes the idea of music in a mobile to a whole new level, boasting a much larger memory than rivals, as well as offering users to combine it with their existing iPod software and music that they have bought from iTunes. The iPhone blurs the lines between different gadgets, including more features than many of its rivals including a high quality camera, the aforementioned iPod, and of course the ability to connect to the internet through the mobile network.

There is nothing new about what the iPhone offers of course, many phones that are already on the market such as the Nokia N95 already offer the same functionality as the Apple, but where these other models really lag behind is in the way in which the user is able to interact with the software.Rather than utilizing a keypad like more conventional phones, the iPhone uses a touch screen that behaves in a completely intuitive manner, and lets users navigate easily through its menus in order to access the functions of the phone. Apple have used the information on user behaviour that they have gathered over twenty years in the computer world to create an operating system for the iPhone that will revolutionize the way in which people use their gadgets.

Because of the amount of demand that Apple knew there would be for the iPhone, its release has been delayed a number of times in order to ensure that the company would have enough phones available to meet demand. This has allowed other manufacturers to beat Apple to the market with their own touch screen phones such as the Samsung W559, which also boasts a powerful camera and a media player.

Of course, what none of these other rival touch screen phones have is the cachet of the Apple iPhone, and despite their sleek designs, they have not managed to capture the attention of the public in the same way. Although they boast good looks and many features, they lack the smoothness of the iPhone, and the ability to be linked in with the rest of a person's music collection held in iTunes, which is why the iPhone on its release will still be number 1!

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Review

Reviewed By Warehouse Express' technical expert Ben Weeks.
Another morning, another train to London for another Canon camera launch. This is becoming something of a habit. Still, at least this one is late enough in the day that I can avoid the early morning commuter crush. A country boy I may be, but that doesn't mean I enjoy feeling like livestock on the way to market. Indeed, this morning's voyage has been rather pleasant.

It started off, as many do, with a taxi to the train station. We've all been there; sat in the front passenger seat next to a complete stranger. You don't want to appear rude and spend the entire journey in resolute silence, but you know nothing about this person next to you, so how do you commence conversation? Inevitably, the same old chestnuts flow; "Are you just starting or just finishing your shift?", or "Busy at the moment?", or that all-time favourite failsafe of the British travelling public "Isn't this weather terrible?"

This morning, however, the conversation was free-flowing from the moment the driver asked where I was going. After I explained the reason for my trip to London, a lengthy discussion ensued regarding the status of the camera market at present. My chauffeur was obviously well informed. He enquired as to whether the increasing popularity and quality of camera-phones was having an effect on camera sales, so we talked about compact cameras versus camera-phones, SLRs versus compact cameras, stills photography versus video, DVD versus hard-drive recording and even Betamax versus VHS. The conclusion we came to was that the most successful players in any of the electronics markets today were the ones who had been able to adapt; those manufacturers who, rather than burying their heads in the sand and hoping that the latest developments in the hi-tech world will pass them by and leave their little corner untouched, embrace the new technologies on offer and incorporate them into their portfolio of products. It is this thought that I currently have in my head as the Suffolk countryside passes by outside the train window.

There's no denying it; Canon are a success story. Along with other brands, they not only excelled in the traditional film based photography of past, but have adapted to, and in many cases led, the change over to a now almost entirely digital industry. However, it's also fair to say that it's been a while since Canon launched an SLR camera that has forced photographers to sit up and take notice of what they are doing. This launch could therefore be very important for them. I, like many people, have my suspicions as to what this new model might be, and if it is what we think it is, then it's a model that has been anticipated for some time by existing Canon SLR users and those looking to invest in an EOS system alike. So, will it be what we think it is and, perhaps more importantly, will it demonstrate Canon's ability to evolve with the ever-changing world of digital photography?

If their HQ at Woodhatch is anything to go by, Canon are evolving just fine, thank you very much. The building, which seems to be made almost entirely out of glass and timber, is itself awash with technological advances. Solar panels on the roof can produce enough electricity to light 50 homes and the computer controlled window shutters open and close to maintain the internal temperature. The lighting adjusts itself depending on the ambient light levels and turns off automatically if there's no one in the area. In short, Canon's UK home is a technological masterpiece. What better environment to launch their latest hi-tech offering?

After the prerequisite coffee and nibbles, it's time to meet the newcomer. It is of course Canon's replacement for the now somewhat long-in-the-tooth EOS 5D. Despite the rumours, it is not the EOS 7D, but rather the more straightforwardly named Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

With a staggering 21.1 mega pixels, the resolution of the 5D Mk II is a whopping 65% more than its predecessor. 21.1 million pixels. That's nearly 1 pixel for every person in Australia. Other marked improvements include a 3.0" display screen, 3.9 frames per second shooting, improved self-cleaning system, Live View and increased ISO range (ISO100-6400; expandable to ISO 50-25,600). In addition, the new Canon EOS 5D Mk II contains Canon's latest DiG!C 4 processor; the original 5D uses the DiG!C 2.

It's hardly surprising that there are so many advances; the Canon EOS 5D Mark II has been a long time coming! Bear in mind that at the time of its launch, the original 5D was the next model up from the EOS 20D. Since then we've had the 30D, then the 40D, and most recently the 50D, which the Canon EOS 5D Mk II now sits above.

However, without a doubt one of Canon's bravest moves with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is the inclusion of a full HD 1920x1080p 30 frame per second video capture. If this performs as well in real life as it does on paper (we weren't allowed to try it at the launch), then it's an incredible addition to a remarkable machine. The movie mode is activated by pressing the "set" button in the centre of the rear control wheel. Press it once to record and again to stop; dead simple. But to avoid the movie mode being activated accidentally, it is necessary to turn it on in the menu and it can only be used with Live View.

When playing with, sorry, testing Canon's new toy, it becomes apparent that the Canon 5D Mark II is probably the most appropriate title for this new EOS. So similar is it to the original model that using it will be second nature to any 5D owner. Sure, there have been some minor tweaks in the layout of the function buttons, mainly to accommodate some new ones, and the Canon Mark II has had the same weatherproofing upgrade the 50D was given, but it still looks and feels like the original 5D. So much so in fact, that the people at Canon were keen to point out to me that the new version is exactly the same size and weight as the old model. I would have anticipated that 8,300,000 extra pixels would have added something, but no, not a sausage.

Following hot on the heels of the Canon EOS 50D as it does, it comes as no great shock to find that the Canon 5D Mark II shares many of that camera's advances. The weatherproofing and Live View have already been mentioned, but the Canon EOS 5D Mark II also has the quick start menu found on the 50D which enables the user to change shooting settings with ease. Bearing in mind the pro/semi-pro market that this camera is aimed at, this facility is possibly even more useful on the Canon 5D Mark II than on the 50D.

It's something I rated the EOS 50D highly for, so it's only fair that I mention it as a slight negative for the Canon 5D Mark II, but unlike it's lower spec stable-mate, the new EOS does not share its predecessor's range of accessories. Whereas the 50D shares batteries and battery grip with the 40D, owners of the original 5D will find themselves having to replace existing batteries and grips as the EOS 5D Mk II takes the new LP-E6 battery and BG-E6 grip.

I would very much have liked to have taken some images with Canon's new baby to include on this article, but unfortunately this was a definite impossibility. No sooner had I taken the Compact Flash card from my pocket than I was practically jumped on by several burly looking Canon people and their Pro guy Mike gave me a look usually only seen on Victorian headmistresses and pre-menstrual traffic wardens. I put the card back into my pocket and backed slowly away.

However, Canon had enlisted the services of professional photographer and writer, Damien Lovegrove. Weddings are one of Damien's specialities and via a studio shoot with an obliging model in a wedding dress, Damien was able to showcase the performance EOS 5D MkII. One of the things that he was clearly taken by was the low image noise levels, something he was able to demonstrate superbly by shooting his model at ISO 6,400 in a dimly lit corridor. The level of detail and lack of noise in the shadow areas was superb, but until I'm allowed to shoot some images myself to show you, you'll have to take my word for it.

Perhaps the most telling statement about this camera is this; when the demonstration was over I approached Damien and put a few questions to him. Amongst other things relating to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II's suitability for his area of photography (the answer was "very"), I asked Damien if the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II would be a good back-up camera for pro photographers using Canon's 1D and 1Ds range of cameras.

"No." he replied, "It's better than that."

High praise indeed.

XBOX e74 error and how to repair

Don't put up with a broken Xbox 360 console any longer. Fix Xbox 360 e74 problems quickly and easily yourself without spending anything more than loose change. Learn what causes thje problem and why the problem is just so common amongst Xbox 360 consoles these days. Be gaming again in less than two hours with the steps that you need to follow to repair your Xbox 360.
The Xbox e74 error cause is actually overheating. However, why does this problem occur in the first place on such a modern piece of equipment? This is simple, heat is able to build up quickly inside the case due to a lack of cooling devices such as fans and heatsinks. This heat then causes damage to your components such as the graphics processor, hard drive or DVD drive, and causes them to malfunction. Your console then displays the e74 code to warn you that something major has gone wrong. This may be accompanied with blinking red lights on your Xbox 360 as well.

In order to fix the problem, you could send your console away to Microsoft for analysis and repair. However, it will take a long time to get your Xbox 360 back, and if your warranty has expired you will have to spend over $100 to have them fix the problem.

That's why the best Xbox e74 repair method is to fix your console yourself. This doesn't take much work (you can carry out the repairs in under two hours, much less if you've ever worked with electronics before) All else you will need is an Xbox 360 repair guide.

Smart Car First Impression

At first glance the smart car has a very unique appearance. It resembles a cube with wheels, with a little styling in the front. This design helps the car corner with great stability. The smart car seems like a reasonable, fuel efficient and surprisingly safe replacement for a gas guzzler.

Overall Impression:
The smart car was designed by Swiss watch maker Swatch. The company specializes in making inexpensive, high quality products that can be relied on. They have been in business since 1988 and sell products in 36 countries. The smart car is amazingly economical getting between 40-50 miles per gallon. It is powered by a 3 cylinder gas engine. The gas tank holds 8.67 gallons and the smart car possess both a reflex and manual operation mode. The body reveals a clear, modular design. The frame is made of reinforced steel called the Tridon safety cell. This gives the smart car its inherent strength.

Engine:
The engine is rear mounted in this vehicle. It is a 999cc version that will comprise both normally aspirated and turbo versions of the vehicle. Engineering and testing continue to take place on the US version. This version is designed to achieve 40/45 mpg city and highway respectively according to 2007 EPA standards and 33/41 city and highway respectively according to 2008 EPA standards. Engine development is expensive and the company appears to waiting to see if the gas version is a success before putting too much money into the diesel version.

Price:
Price is relatively low compared with the expected fuel savings. Prices start at $11,960 for a 2-door model with no options and ascend to $16,590 for a convertible model with all the options. It should be noted that the smart car is a strict 2-Seater with limited luggage space. It appears that the eight foot long smart car is certainly affordable.

Final Thoughts:
Even though it is hard to imagine owning a smart car, it does have legitimate benefits. While no one is likely to be jumping at the opportunity to ride with you, rest assured they will be jealous when they see your fuel bill.

Explaining Flash Drive Basics

If your computer use extends anywhere beyond simple internet surfing, you will find numerous reasons for flash drives. Flash Drives are essentially portable memory. If you have any interest in moving data from one point to another quickly and safely you will want to learn about flash drives.

The most important thing you need to know is that a flash drive is a non-volatile memory source. This means that it the information you put on the drive stays as is without a constant power source. The ability to save information independent of any power source can be very important, especially when problems occur in the workplace or on your home pc. A flash drive will go a long way to ensuring your data is safe.

There are a multitude of uses for a flash drive.

1. Flash drives are ideal for moving files from one place to another. Flash drives are rewritable unlike a lot of CDs or DVDs. You will find this is more convenient and generates much less waste.

2. Some software is designed to run exclusively from a flash drive. This means you can keep your computer with you. You can open programs such as Firefox, Open Office, and many more right from your flash drive.

3. You will also find that sometimes you need to test computers for troubleshooting purposes. You can use a flash drive to store you diagnostic tools. This makes it much easier and less time consuming to move software tools from one computer to another. You can also store and operating system on your flash drive for booting computers with problems.

In closing you will find that having a flash drive can save you a great deal of time and make your life a lot simpler. Take some time to find out what a flash drive can do for you today.
